The Alabama State Department of Education (SDE) and the federal No Child Left Behind law require testing in grades 3-8 to assess student achievement based upon the Alabama courses of study in reading and mathematics. Alabama utilizes the Stanford Achievement Test 10 and the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test to measure student achievement. Students in high school must, also, be evaluated in reading and mathematics. Alabama meets this federal requirement by administering the Alabama High School Graduation Exam for our 11th grade students. While the achievement level in reading and mathematics are measured, all five subtests must be successfully completed before a student may receive a regular Alabama high school diploma or higher.
To measure the writing skills of students the Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing: Grade 5, Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing: Grade 7, and Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing: Grade 10 are used.

American College Testing Program
Below is a 10-year history of average scores of students taking the ACT from T.R. Miller High School and Alabama. The ACT assessment is designed for students who plan to attend college so these averages represent students who have at, a minimum, taken courses listed below.
English - Four years or more
Mathematics - Three years or more
Social Studies - Three years or more
Natural Science - Three years or more
